Classical Oil Painting Courses in the Heart of Dorset
Seven-day residential painting holidays for beginners and improvers, with full board and a maximum of six guests.
What You'll Learn
-
Begin with charcoal drawing to develop your eye for composition, tone, and form — the foundations that underpin all good painting.
-
Understand how to mix, apply, and control colour in the classical tradition - working from observation, not theory alone.
-
Progress to oils and complete several paintings during the week. Most students leave with four or more finished works.
The House
Thurnwood is a substantial country house between Sherborne and Dorchester, set in the Dorset countryside at the end of a three-quarter-mile private drive.
Guests stay in the house or in one of two adjoining cottages, and dine together each evening. Breakfasts and lunches are generous and informal.
Dinner is three courses with wine, prepared from locally sourced produce. There is always tea and coffee through the day.
Next Courses
The course is fully inclusive - seven nights' accommodation, all meals, and wine with dinner.
Non-painting partners are welcome to stay at a reduced rate, and non-residential places are also available for those arranging their own accommodation.
Student Gallery
A selection of work produced by students during a single residential course.
